Jim Patterson has been in the brass instrument repair business since 1980. He built his first natural horn in 1995 followed by a double horn in 2000. He began his musical studies at age 9 on the Piano/Organ then joined the Middle School Band at age 11 first on Trumpet then Tuba. He switched to the horn in 1972 at the age of 13.
Jim studied the horn at U.S.C. with Hollywood Studio greats Vince DeRosa and Jim Decker and prior to that with Ralph Pyle, (LA Phil). He has performed as a free lance and recording musician in Los Angeles and also played Natural Horn with the Los Angeles Baroque Orchestra and Musica Antigua, which are period instrument ensembles. He currently performs with the El Paso Symphony, Las Cruces Symphony, Roswell Symphony, various Chamber Ensembles and some free lance work.
As a horn maker, Jim has studied with Lowell Greer in the development of Natural Horns and their history, and spent 5 years working with custom Trumpet Maker, Bob Malone. He opened his first shop in Los Angeles from 1995-2005 then moved to his current location in Las Cruces, New Mexico.
Jim credits all of his teachers for helping to build strong playing fundamentals which have been of tremendous value in the determination of how particular instruments work and how they might be made better.
Cora Patterson is married to Jim and together they make and repair horns along with raising three children, Phil who also helps in the shop and attends New Mexico State University as a percussion/ music business major, Ellen a high school student and horn player and Ian a middle school student interested in movie making and drumming.
In 1985, after receiving a Bachelors degree in Music from University of Texas El Paso on trombone, Cora began her second Bachelors degree in Music Education from the Univ. of Delaware while studying horn with Francis Orval. She and Jim met in 1993 and Cora taught music for several years in Los Angeles while Jim began the Patterson Hornworks business. Cora, after several years away from the horn and a fresh start in New Mexico has come back to playing and currently plays horn with the Roswell Symphony and occasionally the El Paso Symphony.
