Jim Patterson currently plays assistant horn with the El Paso Symphony and frequently performs with the Roswell Symphony. Jim studied horn at the University of Southern California with studio greats Jim Decker and Vince DeRosa from 1974-1980. While in LA, he played horn regularly in regional orchestras and recording work, and played natural horn in the LA Baroque orchestra.
Jim Patterson, owner and creative force behind Patterson Hornworks, started his business in Los Angeles in 1997.It was in the early 90's that he began to build his business as a leading brass technician. Since then Jim has designed numerous mouthpieces, modifications, and horns and has built more than 90 Patterson custom horns since 2001. In 2005, he and his wife, Cora, moved their business to Las Cruces, NM.
Cora Patterson works at Patterson Hornworks, and performs regularly with the Roswell Symphony and the Las Cruces New Horizons orchestra. She occasionally plays substitute horn with the El Paso Symphony.
Cora's first instrument was trombone. She studied trombone at New Mexico State University finishing her undergraduate degree at the University of Texas, El Paso. During that time she played in a variety of ensembles including jazz band and traveled to the Montruex Jazz Festival twice with college ensembles playing lead trombone in 1982 and 1984.
While finishing her degree at UTEP, Cora took an interest in the horn. She moved across the country to Newark, DE to pursue her music education degree at the University of Delaware where she had the opportunity to study horn with Francis Orval. She performed in chamber music ensembles and in several orchestras in the Delaware/Philadelphia area before returning to the Southwest where she met her husband Jim Patterson and settled with him in the Los Angeles area.
While in Los Angeles, Cora worked as a music teacher in the Los Angeles public schools for seven years then joined Jim full time in the horn business in 2001.
